What is Project Management and how is it achieved?
Project Management is a methodical approach to planning and guiding a project from conception to completion. Successful project management is achieved through five stages:
Initiation
Planning
Execution
Control
Completion
The role of the Project Manager
The primary role of the Project Manager is to achieve all proposed project objectives within the specified constraints of the Project Execution Requirements (the workforce and materials needed to produce the desired result), the Timescale (the time available and specified completion date) and the Budget (the resources available to cover the project), bringing the project to a satisfactory conclusion for all parties. This can often prove to be very challenging in that the three constraints may well conflict, for example, if time is of the essence, the completion of the project could necessitate an increased workforce thus leading to higher costs or the available resources are insufficient to meet project execution requirements.
What is involved in Project Management?
Project Management covers a wide spectrum of responsibilities, e.g.
- Analysis and design of objectives
- Accurate measurement of project and drawing up plans
- Planning the work according to the objectives defined in the proposal
- Assessing and controlling risk
- Estimation and subsequent allocation of resources
- Tender preparation, procurement and award
- Acquisition of human and material resources
- Assigning and directing tasks
- Tracking and reporting progress to the client
- Quality control
- Overseeing work and problem solving
- Defect prevention and snagging
- Identifying and managing any amendments to the original proposal
- Project completion and final accounting
